182 years of independence!
JPD Foundation Community Center had the honor of hosting a Press Conference yesterday with the Governor of New York State, Kathy Hochul, Congressman Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), and other authorities such as Consul General Jesús (Chu) Vásquez Martínez. It was a celebration of the Dominican Independence Day in New York State.
Dominican Independence Day, celebrated annually on February 27, marks the 1844 declaration of independence from Haiti, ending 22 years of Haitian rule. La Trinitaria Duarte, Mella and Sánchez triggered the war for freedom and founded the Dominican Republic.
Today, 182 years later, seventeen major NY State landmarks, including the Niagara Falls, will highlight Dominican pride, with red, white, and blue colors displayed everywhere to honor the flag and the nation’s freedom.
During the event at JPD Community Center, Laura Acosta, Founder and Executive Director of JPD Foundation, received an honorary Certificate of Congressional Recognition for her work as Co-founder and Executive Director of JPD since its inception in 2003.

¡Ayer, el Centro Comunitario de la Fundación JPD fue el epicentro del orgullo dominicano en la ciudad de Nueva York! Tuvimos el honor de recibir a la gobernadora Kathy Hochul, al congresista Adriano Espaillat y al cónsul general Jesús (Chu) Vásquez Martínez para celebrar 182 años de Independencia.
El Día de la Independencia Dominicana, que se celebra anualmente el 27 de febrero, marca la declaración de independencia de 1844, poniendo fin a 22 años de dominio haitiano. Los líderes de La Trinitaria —Duarte, Mella y Sánchez— iniciaron la guerra por la libertad y fundaron la República Dominicana.
¡Y felicidades a nuestra querida Laura Acosta! Ella recibió un Certificado de Reconocimiento Congresional especial por su labor como cofundadora y directora ejecutiva de JPD desde su creación en el 2003. 
¡Esta noche, miren hacia el horizonte! Desde las Cataratas del Niágara hasta el Capitolio del Estado de Nueva York, Nueva York brilla en rojo, blanco y azul solo por nosotros.
